ISPA Update

So we launched the ISPA web site back on the 16th of July.   We have seen a tremendous outpouring of emails and it appears our goals were in line with the community.  We were a bit rushed to get the site up and thanks to some quick and great branding work from we were able to put out something that was pleasing to the eye.  Most of you that know me well know I strongly lack any artistic or creative talents when it comes to this stuff so I want to personally thank Heather for her work.

If you ask people the importance of an organizations web site you will get alot of different answers.  For me it was somewhat important as we are an official Not for Profit Organization.... imagine that... me on a board of any type  :)   But here i stand.  My role with the ISPA is to work with the User Group Leaders and the that I have brought in to work with the world regions.   Some comments I have gotten was that this seems to be a largely US based Organization.  This is something i want to clear up for everyone.  We (the ISPA Board) are all based here in the US but the people we have on board with us are largely outside the US.  I wont list all there names here but Steve Smith in the UK is my direct equal for providing support in EMEA and he is the lead Evangelist for that region.  People like Muhanad Omar and Marwan Tarek who are supporting the Middle East (very busy and active region thus far)  Chandima in New Zealand, the Australia Team,  Micheal Greth in Germany, and the Spanish community who we are going to be working very closely with in the next few months as we are trying to set up variation pages so we can truly cater to the international audience.   We are worldwide.  We are one community.  The ISPA doesn't belong to Bob Fox or any of the other ...  it belongs to you.

Some quick success stories I would like to bring up is that we are looking to bring the first SharePoint User Group into Vietnam.... we are also talking with people in Russia to expand into that area.  It has been a very exciting two weeks for us.

We recently put out a page that we hope answers some of the questions we have been getting and we will expand on this as we move forward.  We are also ready to have people join us.  We have enlisted the help of to come onboard and assist with publishing and he put out a fine ""  article this evening.  It will be the first of many from not just Eric but many others as well.   This is just one of many plans we are formulating to bring to the community.

Did you know we also offer sites for SharePoint User Groups?  Well its true we do.  You can submit a request .   Please note that we are a fairly small shop at this level and its just myself and doing this work so depending on when your group is going live and the demand we get for groups it may not be an automatic quick turnaround but we promise to do our best to meet your timelines.

Do you already have an existing User Group and just want it listed on our site?  You can submit your information .  This by the way was the single most asked question so I am glad we now have the mechanism in place for the members to submit to.

Most importantly ... would you like to be a member?  We admit that this is still a work in progress offering with regards to the web site but we are moving forward nicely and hope you will grow with us. You can sign up .  Please note that we will be setting up a area for members to add there profiles.  You may see a link to this but its not available at this time.   We will post on the front page when this is up and running.

So there it is.... two weeks into our journey.   Hope you enjoy the ride as much as we are.

NJ SharePoint Users Group Meeting for July 23

Please join us on July 23rd for the monthly New Jersey SharePoint Users Group meeting.   This month we will be looking at NewsGator's Social Networking capabilities.  If your interested in bringing Social Networking into your environment then this session will be for you.

Topic: “SharePoint Social Networking”

Guest Speaker:  Ashley Roach, Product Manager, NewsGator Technologies, Inc.

Presentation:
Enhancing SharePoint’s Social Networking Capabilities

Description:

Please join NewsGator’s Senior Sales Engineer John Worrell as he discusses and shows how NewsGator Social Sites extended Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 with social feedback (i.e. bookmarking, tagging, commenting), social networking, and community functionality by leveraging the SharePoint platform and social computing services provided by NewsGator Enterprise Server. SharePoint is a great foundation for social computing application development and can be easily extended through web parts and web services.

If your users are asking for FaceBook for the enterprise functionality, if there is interest in a MySite initiative this will be an excellent session to attend. John and NewsGator will discuss and show how to provide a unified user experience for information aggregation, discovery, consumption as well as social feedback and to enable cross-organization online communities that facilitate ad-hoc collaboration as well as knowledge capture and sharing.

John will discuss how NewsGator’s developers implemented a rich set of XML endpoints that extend the SharePoint runtime and make data available to AJAX enabled web parts. Also the implementation of a set of AJAX enabled web services and a JavaScript library to abstract these calls. Finally, how they implemented it all with lightweight web parts using the open source SharePoint AJAX Toolkit that use simple XSLT rendering along with a common NewsGator script library built with ASP.NET AJAX.

For more information along with directions and registration please visit the NJ SharePoint Users Group web site or simply click to register

See you there.

Announcing the International SharePoint Professionals Association

I’m happy to finally announce the launch of the ISPA.  A lot of time and effort has been put into bringing this online and we hope as this grows we will have an abundance of offerings for the SharePoint Community.   I first want to present the press release that we have put out, then I want to list and thank the individuals that helped to make this happen and also a very special group of men and women that have been and will continue to be a tremendous asset for the community worldwide.

"The International SharePoint Professionals Association, also known as ‘ISPA’, is an independent, not-for-profit, community-driven organization dedicated to support SharePoint professionals and groups all around the world. The primary mission of ISPA is to promote the global adoption of SharePoint Technologies by providing support and guidance to the SharePoint community as a whole – by establishing connections between SharePoint professionals, groups, resources, education and information. ISPA is led and supported by volunteers across the world, and will focus on bringing the entire SharePoint community closer together.

ISPA’s first offering to the community is support to user groups around the world through free WSS v3 web sites for any group that becomes ISPA-affiliated. In addition, one of the goals of ISPA is to facilitate an exchange of ideas between user group leaders that helps increase the likelihood of their group’s success. Therefore, ISPA is providing leaders of user groups with access to collaborative spaces where they can interact with other user group leaders, sharing ideas, resources, best practices, guidance, and most importantly – support for one another.

ISPA has also established Regional Evangelists – existing community leaders who have previously exhibited a strong commitment to the promotion of the SharePoint community, and who have pledged to carry the ISPA message throughout their particular region. These evangelists are key local contacts who are available to work with local SharePoint professionals and user groups throughout their region to help promote the community and SharePoint. If you are interested in starting a user group, have an existing one, or need guidance – the ISPA Regional Evangelists are great resources who are available immediately to assist you.

Finally, as everyone knows, no community is complete without a web site, and ISPA is proud to announce the launch of its official site, http://www.sharepointpros.org. While the web site is still in the early stages of development, plans for multilingual support and exciting functionality that will assist anyone involved with SharePoint are on the horizon.

If you have ideas for ISPA, would like to start a user group, or are looking for assistance, visit the new ISPA web site or contact ISPA at contactus@sharepointpros.org. Together, the community can achieve what was impossible as individuals - becomes a part of ISPA today!"

To be honest the ISPA is made up of everyone in the SharePoint community but there has to be some people that helped to get this started.   I want to personally thank the following individuals who are part of the ISPA Board:

Darrin Bishop

Natalya Voskresenskaya

Christopher Regan

ISPA Regional Evangelists

I would also like to introduce a group of community leads that we reached out to early on to help us not only support and evangelize SharePoint User Groups worldwide but to also act as ambassadors for the product.  These individuals are spread across the  world and we have most sectors covered.  This will grow as we grow this out.

Topic: “SharePoint for ASP.NET Developers”

Guest Speaker:
Josh Carlisle, B&R Business Solutions, LLC

Presentation:
SharePoint for ASP.NET Developers

Description:
Whether it is by choice or by company directive many traditional ASP.NET developers are being tasked to implement and support SharePoint based solutions for their company. Previous versions of SharePoint only utilized the .NET Framework but SharePoint 2007 has been rebuilt from ground up on the .NET Framework. Many have even referred to SharePoint as application extensions for ASP.NET. In this session we'll cover many of the common elements found in ASP.NET and we'll compare and contrast the implementations of those elements in SharePoint in order to get a better understanding of how to leverage your skills and knowledge as an ASP.NET developer within the SharePoint context.

See you there!

SharePoint User Group Meeting Format Idea

Recently one of the groups I work with ( held an interesting meeting.   Normally you go to groups and see this speaker or that speaker diving into this or that topic.  We decided to try something new.... ok its not new and no i didnt come up with this idea but it was something that i have never seen happen in any of my groups nor have i heard of others doing it.   We held an open forum type of meeting.  A small group of us (4 to be exact) all coming from separate disciplines sat in chairs in front of a room full of people and let them fire away questions.  Each of the panel members would chime in and provide answers and we in turn fired back questions to the audience.

This was actually one of the best meetings I have ever attended.... why?  We got to interact with the other attendees in a way that is usually done after the presentation is complete or when the speaker decides to answer questions on his or her topic.   For this meeting we had something for everyone.  The ITPros were engaged.... The Devs were engaged... the Business users were engaged... every one was engaged.   I loved this and I challenge other UG Leads to try this.  You will be surprised how your session turns out.

So are you having problems trying to get a speaker to come to a meeting every once in a while?   Throw this model in.... Grab some local MVP's or Microsoft Blue Badgers or Consultants in general and put them up in chairs and let the audience fire away at them.

The will now hold these sessions once every few months and I will be back to work as a panel member or even just sit there and ask my own questions as an attendee.   It was alot of fun.

Windows 2008 and SharePoint Better Together Part 1

For those that were at the SharePoint Conference back in March I presented with Joel Oleson and Todd Klindt or to be more exact I performed the demonstrations for this presentation.   I was scheduled to present again at TechEd but due to a scheduling conflict on my end I will be leaving sunny Florida before this session.  One thing I have been meaning to do was put out some posts on the various areas i demonstrated.

In the accompanying screen cast I am going to give a walkthrough of one of my favorite tools which is the Server Manager.  For those of you that are using Vista are familiar with Computer Manager.  Functional with a nice interface

ComputerManager

So if we crack open Windows Server 2008 the one thing I hear alot from people is " Hey look its just Vista with a different name"  So they are right in some aspects.   Alot of the functionality that is in Vista was ported across to Server 2008 its not quite the same.  A noticeable difference is the inclusion of Roles and Features.

ServerManager

Pretty cool huh? Ok so lets go a wee bit deeper and have a look at some of the benefits you will get with Windows Server 2008.  Again this was part of the presentation Joel and I gave so I am grabbing some great bullet points that Joel spoke on.
